Dangerous Assumptions about Vitamin D.

You know what they say about assuming!

One of the common mistakes that people make with their Vitamin D strategy is to assume that their Vitamin D level is adequate. The mistake is similar to people who simply hope their Vitamin D level is enough to protect them.
This is like leaving your health to chance. Hoping that your Vitamin D level is optimal is a good way to get sick and be disappointed. It is dangerous to just assume that your Vitamin D level is enough to provide the immune system benefits you need.
Here is a great example to consider: Everyone knows that sunshine is the best way to get Vitamin D, but many people will make the mistake of thinking that since they spent a sunny Saturday afternoon doing yard work, they will have excellent Vitamin D levels. The reality, for most people, is that a couple of hours of sunshine doing yard work will barely make a dent in their Vitamin D deficiency.

Another example that I have seen often when I ask people if they take a Vitamin D supplement is that they respond with: "I think my multivitamin has that in it." They say this as if they are hopeful that the small amount of Vitamin D in the multivitamin will be enough. The typical multivitamin doesn't have enough Vitamin D in it to make a real impact on blood levels.
Vitamin D levels are very important. A reasonable explanation for why some people would leave such an important thing to chance is that they either don't realize how common inadequate Vitamin D levels are or are unaware of how important it is to achieve an optimal Vitamin D level. It could be a combination of both.
We recommend Vitamin D testing. Knowing your Vitamin D level is incredibly empowering. The only way to see if you're getting enough Vitamin D through sunshine, diet, and supplementation is to test and find out. You should utilize Vitamin D testing to understand rather than hoping, guessing, or assuming.
