Pro Tip: No Vitamin D supplements for 48 hours before a Vitamin D test.

Ensure you don't give yourself a falsely high result.

Your Vitamin D level is one of your most essential biomarkers, and testing is critical for your and your family's health. It's crucial to get as accurate results as possible. Don't make the mistake of receiving inaccurately high results by consuming a Vitamin D supplement too close to the time of the actual blood test.

I've seen this happen too many times. Someone takes their Vitamin D supplement the same morning as they do a Vitamin D test, and then when their results come back, we can't trust whether they accurately represent what's happening in their body.

You should give yourself 48 hours between your last Vitamin D supplementation and the test because you want your body to have time to equilibrate or reach balance. Vitamin D is stored in your tissues, especially fatty tissues. When you take a supplement, the goal is to provide enough extra Vitamin D in the bloodstream to let your tissues take it in and store it. If you take your Vitamin D test too close to when you've taken a supplement, you're not getting an accurate representation of tissue levels.

By contrast, when you refrain from taking the supplement, your low blood levels will allow the tissues to release some Vitamin D to reach a balance between tissue and blood. This is why the most accurate indication of systemic Vitamin D levels comes from a test done after two days of not supplementing.

Final thoughts: If you're going to take a Vitamin D test, you should ensure it is as accurate as possible. Vitamin D levels are crucial for health, and you don't want to have misleading results. We recommend waiting 48 hours from the last Vitamin D-containing supplement you consumed before taking a Vitamin D test.
